Monday, November 7th, the Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies will play the first of two scheduled matches this season. Boston will host the second meeting on February 12th.

The Celtics last played Saturday in a winning 133-118 effort versus the Knicks while Memphis is completing a back-to-back set having won the front side 103-97 against the Wizards on Sunday

Last season, the squads played twice with the Celtics winning both contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 33 of their 52 matches.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics rebounded from losing three out of four contests with consecutive victories versus the Bulls and Knicks. In the latter, they scored 133 points with six Celtics scoring in double-figures.

Jaylen Brown led the way dropping 30 points while Jayson Tatum scored 26 and they both hit six 3-pointers.

On the season, Tatum is averaging 30.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Brown isn’t getting the same MVP hype but he’s been effective as well averaging 25.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists.

The Celtics lead the NBA scoring 118.8 points per game. They are scoring efficiently shooting 47.9 percent from the field (6th) and 39.3 percent from the perimeter (5th).

Defense remains a concern with the Bean Town crew allowing opponents to score 115.3 points per game ranking 20th. Their opponents are scoring at will shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from the perimeter both ranking 22nd.

Boston’s offensive prowess is helping them pile up the victories but as I’ve noted prior they need to pay more attention to the defensive side of the hardwood.

Eventually, they’ll run into better defensive clubs and while Robert Williams will impact that end when he returns, relying on that factor isn’t helping them develop good habits.

Al Horford (back) is questionable for Monday. Robert Williams III (knee) is out indefinitely. Danilo Gallinari (ACL) is lost for the season.

Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant continues to put on jaw-dropping performances leading his Grizzlies. Many pundits thought the Grizz would take a minor step back this season with several stars returning from injury in the West and Jaren Jackson Jr. out until at least mid-January.

Instead, after Sunday’s match, they are only a half-game back out of first in the West.

Morant is averaging 29.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds. He’s shooting 50% from deep on 3.8 attempts and getting to the line for 9.3 free throws per game.

Desmond Bane continues his development experiencing increases in all three major categories with 24.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. He’s also upped his 3-point attempts from 6.9 to 8.9 per game and is hitting them with 46.5% efficiency.

Offensively, the Grizzlies are among the top squads in the league scoring 118.7 points per game which ranks second just behind the Celtics. They’re shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from the perimeter, ranking 11th and third respectively.

The Grizzlies allow opponents to score 117.2 per game which ranks 26th while their foes shoot 46.2 percent from the field (13th) and 37.1 percent from the perimeter (23rd).

Ziaire Williams (knee – mid-Dec) Jackson Jr. (foot – late Dec) and Danny Green (ACL -mid-Feb) are out indefinitely.

NBA Betting Trends:

The Celtics are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight-up record. The Grizzlies are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Over is 13-3 in the Celtics’ last 16 vs. a team with a winning straight-up record. Over is 4-0 in the Grizzlies’ previous last 4 home games. The Celtics are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Memphis.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:

Entering Sunday, the teams had identical records but the Grizzlies’ victory moved them a half-game back of the Suns for first in the West and a half-game ahead of the Celtics’ record.

Considering how close these two clubs are in terms of their statistical performance, team compilation, young talents etc, the fact Boston is favored is an odd choice.

Sure, Boston has the rest advantage but Memphis played at home with only Morant (33) and Bane (35) playing more than 30 minutes so they weren’t overly taxed.

Last season Morant sounded off about how his team was never featured in the Nationally televised games despite their success so oddsmakers picking the Celts as favorites on the road is PRECISELY the type of fuel the Grizz will use to motivate them to win.
